The following letter was written by Ann's sister Helen:

Dear Friends,

Ann is my younger sister by 6 years, so I have known her all her life.  She is number 4 of 9 children, and was always the peacemaker in the family--the one who would happily volunteer to help anyone in need.

Ann and her husband John have four grown children.  They have given her beautiful grandchildren that she adores and wants to spoil for many more years.

For 25 years, while raising her own children, Ann organized, ran, and taught a children's singing/dancing group called "Singing Connection". They performed all over northern Utah and brought joy and smiles to their audiences.  Her students learned not only to sing and dance, but to handle a microphone, maintain composure on stage, and perform with confidence.  At that time, I was a divorced mother of 4 children, working on a college degree.  For several years, Ann graciously taught all four of my children as scholarship students. I can attest to the value of what she taught.

During this time, Ann was supporting her husband who owns and runs a small business, serving in many different capacities (leadership and otherwise) in her church, working as a tax preparer, helping her extended family, and contributing in her community.

After her own children were grown, Ann went back to college to add a teaching certificate to her degree.  She chose an alternate path which allowed her to earn credits while teaching full time.  A conscientious educator, she spent many hours in preparation for each teaching day and her students loved her.

2018 was a big year.  Not only did Ann receive the "Teacher of the Year" award from her peers, she received an unwelcome letter from her doctor.  On Nov. 7, 2018, Ann was diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 colon cancer that has metastasized to her liver.  She began a treatment of chemotherapy on Dec. 10, 2018 along with multiple natural immune-building protocols which have kept up her strength, energy and spirits during the chemo.

At the time, Ann was still an elementary school teacher.  She tried to continue teaching, but it became impossible, so she went on family medical leave during treatments.  She went back to the classroom for a short time, but it too much for her and actually set back her recovery.  So, in 2019 she quit her profession to work on living.

Ann had some medical insurance from her school teaching, but that has ended.  She has disability insurance, which is limited and will be running out.  She and her husband have been handling the co-pays with the help of family members, but the treatments that have been helping her the most cost $1600-$2000 per month, out of pocket.

Initially the tumors were shrinking, but have grown back.  Ann very much wants to start a treatment called Insulin Potentiated Therapy (IPT), which is only available out of state.  The cost for the therapy alone will be at least $40,000, not counting living expenses for the weeks she is there.  Obviously, the sooner she can do this, the better, as time is of the essence.

We have a large family that has been contributing financially, emotionally, and other ways--all of whom are interested in continuing to help Ann.  Being able to deduct the cost of her treatment at tax time would be a significant help, and allowing an even broader base of donors outside of the family to contribute. Some have already offered to help.  One of her former Singing Connection students directed a play at the Hopebox Theater in Kaysville, in Ann's behalf.  (The Hopebox cast is composed of cancer survivors who provide the entertainment, while all of the proceeds to go a deserving recipient).

Having the support of family and friends has been a great emotional uplift for Ann through this experience.  She is so truly grateful and feels blessed by the outpouring of love.  She dearly wants to regain her health and continue with the life of dedicated service she has always shown.  Ann mentioned to me recently that this experience has really solidified her belief and knowledge that this life is not about a big house or fancy toys - it's all about people and love.  We people want to feel the love in her presence for a long time to come.

Sincerely,

Helen Watts
