Kaliana Suhaka is seventeen years old and the third of ten children. She is a beautiful person, a fantastic student, and very kind to others.
On July 31, the Suhaka's oldest brother returned from his mission in Atlanta, Georgia. That evening all of the family members climbed into their big van to celebrate his return by going out to dinner. Kali was sitting between her uncle and her six year old brother, Joshua. She had her phone plugged into a portable battery charger, which was positioned behind her back.
When the van came to a stop at an intersection, the charger spontaneously exploded, and Kali’s clothes and the bench seat immediately caught fire. She was enveloped in flames. Kali’s amazing uncle put both his hands in the fire, released her seatbelt and then carried Kali out of the vehicle. He and Kali's mother were able to extinguish the fire on her clothes before it got to her head and face, but Kali’s back and arms were severely burned. The side of Joshua’s car seat melted in the heat, but he was miraculously unharmed. Both Kali and her uncle were rushed to a nearby hospital, then she was taken to the University of Utah burn trauma center. Her uncle sustained severe burns on both hands and fingers, but he was treated and released for home care. Kali was kept in the burn unit and will remain there for skin graft surgeries and recovery.
We would like to deliver a Giving Tree to Kali and her Uncle Conley to show love and support, and to help alleviate costs associated with this painful accident. This is a very special and powerful tradition which we continue with honor. For more information about the giving tree, please visit: Anything For A Friend - Giving Tree Legacy
