Nicole Harward is a 40 year-old devoted wife and mother. She and her husband have four daughters, ages 16, 13, 8, and 6. She is a wonderful woman. She is creative and helpful. She has a cheerful disposition, and doesn’t complain, even when things are hard. She has served others in many capacities both in her church and community. She is loved by many.
In March of 2018, life was going along its typical course. The family was excited that they had just moved into a larger home that would better accommodate their growing family. As one of life’s bumps in the road, Nicole’s oldest daughter developed a persistent rash on her face, resulting in a trip to the dermatologist. After her daughter was treated and prescribed some medication, before leaving the doctor’s office, Nicole’s daughter commented that her mother ought to have the doctor look at what Nicole had referred to as her “funny mole,” Upon first glance the doctor was not amused, and saw nothing funny about the mole. He performed a biopsy on the spot.
A series of events, that included temporarily lost medical records, meant it was the third week of April, 2018, before Nicole received a call from Huntsman Cancer Institute. She was informed that her mole was “within the criteria of needing surgery.” She was operated on the beginning of May, and diagnosed with Stage 3 Melanoma.
To treat her cancer, chemotherapy began in July of 2018. Nicole is receiving a form of chemotherapy recently approved by the FDA for Stage 3 Melanoma. It is groundbreaking in that it targets the immune system to teach it to destroy cancer cells. With its amazing properties, comes an amazing price tag. The treatments are $35,000 each. She will receive them monthly through July of 2019. The family’s health insurance carries a very high out of pocket deductible. Payments to the Huntsman Center, to meet the Harward’s share of the treatment costs, are currently $650.00 a month. As treatment started the middle of 2018, and 2019 brings a new year, requiring the new deductible, the monthly payments for the treatments will be $1300.00 for the first six months of 2019, then drop back to $650.
This pattern of six months of $1300.00 payments, then six months of $650.00 a month (possibly more if the out of pocket maximum is raised) will continue each year for the next five years, as the prescribed regime for Nicole’s follow-up, after treatment, will involve extensive scans and follow up tests. The yearly costs of these diagnostic tools will easily meet the family’s out of pocket maximum until 2024.
Nicole has a supportive family, and a group of friends who sincerely care about her. When a group text went out to find out who would like to serve on a committee to plan a fundraiser to ease this burden, the response was rapid. As friends of the Harward family, we are desirous to ease this financial burden for Nicole and her family.
Obviously, funds raised will help the family’s wallet. However, there is more. This extreme monthly financial burden is putting a great deal of stress on Nicole. In fact, when she learned of the costs of treatment, her first reaction is she would not do it, as it was more than their family budget can afford. Her mother was able to help her understand that regardless of cost, she is needed to raise her daughters, and those of us who love her want to continue to enjoy her association. Psychologists have learned that stress impedes the effectiveness of the immune system. In light of that knowledge, we sincerely believe that helping ease this financial burden for Nicole, and her family, will allow her to heal more effectively.
